AS9100 Clause 8.5 – Production and Service Provision

AS9100 is an internationally recognized Quality Management System standard specific to the aerospace industry. It incorporates the entirety of the current version of ISO 9001, while adding additional requirements addressing civil & military aviation and aerospace needs.

Section 8.5 of the standard is concerned with “Production and Service Provision”. It is one of the most critical parts of AS9100, as it pertains to the control of the processes that produce the product or provide the service offered by the organization. Here are its sub-clauses:

  • 8.5.1 Control of production and service provision: Companies are required to plan, carry out and control the conditions for product and service provision. This involves specific requirements such as availability of information describing characteristics, availability and use of monitoring and measuring, implementation of monitoring and measurement activities, use of suitable infrastructure and environment for operation, etc.
  • 8.5.2 Identification and traceability: This requirement focuses on the use of suitable means to identify outputs and the ability to trace all products and services to ensure that only correct and acceptable items are used.
  • 8.5.3 Property belonging to customers or external providers: Procedures are required to be in place to verify, protect, and safeguard customer property provided for use or incorporation into products/services.
  • 8.5.4 Preservation: There should be appropriate processes to preserve product during internal processing and delivery to intended destination. This includes identification, handling, contamination control, packaging, storage, transmission, and protection.
  • 8.5.5 Post-delivery activities: These can include activities like warranty provisions, contractual obligations like maintenance services, and the consideration of potential undesired consequences associated with the product.
  • 8.5.6 Control of changes: Procedures are required for controlling and re-validating changes made to production or service provision, to ensure they do not adversely impact the intended outcome.
