AS9100 Clause 4.2 – Understanding The Needs and Expectations of Interested Parties

AS9100D is an internationally recognized quality management system standard specifically designed for the aerospace industry. It is based on the ISO 9001 standard but includes additional requirements to address the unique needs and regulatory requirements of the aerospace sector. Clause 4.2 of AS9100D focuses on understanding the needs and expectations of interested parties.

The purpose of this clause is to ensure that organizations identify, understand, and consider the needs and expectations of relevant interested parties, which could have an impact on the organization’s ability to meet the requirements of its quality management system. Interested parties include customers, suppliers, employees, regulatory authorities, and others who have a stake in the organization’s products, services, or performance.

To comply with this clause, an organization should take the following steps:

  1. Identify interested parties: Determine who the relevant interested parties are, considering both internal and external stakeholders. This may include customers, suppliers, employees, regulatory authorities, shareholders, competitors, and other organizations or individuals with an interest in the organization’s activities.
  2. Determine relevant requirements: Identify and understand the requirements of these interested parties, which may include explicit or implicit expectations, regulatory requirements, or contractual obligations.
  3. Monitor and review: Regularly monitor and review information about the needs and expectations of interested parties, updating the organization’s understanding as needed. This may involve tracking customer feedback, supplier performance, regulatory changes, or industry trends.
  4. Incorporate into the QMS: Integrate the identified needs and expectations into the organization’s quality management system, ensuring that processes and objectives align with these requirements. This includes considering the needs and expectations of interested parties when establishing and reviewing the organization’s quality policy and objectives.
  5. Communicate and engage: Establish effective communication channels with interested parties to ensure that their needs and expectations are understood and addressed. This may involve developing relationships with key stakeholders, sharing information, and soliciting feedback.

By understanding the needs and expectations of interested parties, an organization can better align its quality management system with the requirements of its stakeholders, ensuring that it delivers products and services that meet or exceed their expectations while complying with applicable regulations and industry standards.
