AS9100 is an internationally recognized Quality Management System standard specifically designed for the aviation, space, and defense industries. AS9100 replaces the earlier AS9000 and incorporates the entirety of the ISO 9001:2015 standard, along with specific requirements relating to the aerospace sector.
This clause is further subdivided into three sub-clauses:
9.1 Monitoring, Measurement, Analysis, and Evaluation: Organizations are required to determine what needs to be monitored and measured, the methods for monitoring, measurement, analysis and evaluation needed to ensure valid results, when the monitoring and measuring shall be performed, and when the results from monitoring and measurement shall be analyzed and evaluated. They also need to evaluate their performance and the effectiveness of the Quality Management System. Specific to AS9100, organizations need to include considerations of the products and services, customer satisfaction, providers and the performance of external providers, among others.
9.2 Internal Audit: This sub-clause details the requirements for conducting internal audits to provide information on the Quality Management System conformity and effectiveness. Internal audits should also include the process and product audits. For aerospace industry specific, the audits need to ensure that the Quality Management System is effectively implemented and maintained.
9.3 Management Review: Organizations are required to review their Quality Management System at planned intervals to ensure its continuing suitability, adequacy, and effectiveness. The review should include considerations of the status of actions from previous management reviews, changes in external and internal issues, information on the performance and effectiveness of the QMS, etc. Aerospace specific additions include the performance of key characteristics, trends in process ability and product conformity, supplier performance, customer satisfaction, resource needs, etc.
In conclusion, Clause 9 emphasizes the importance of performance evaluation within the Quality Management System for continuous improvement. This means a company should monitor, measure, analyze, and evaluate its quality performance, conduct regular internal audits, and perform management reviews. It’s a crucial part of maintaining and improving quality standards in the aerospace industry.
