AS9100 Clause 8.5.1 – Control of Production and Service Provision

AS9100 is an international quality management standard specifically written for the aerospace industry. The AS9100D is the most recent version of this standard as of my last training data in September 2021. Section 8 of the AS9100D is about operation, and it outlines the requirements for planning, implementing, and controlling the processes needed for the production and service provision.

8.5.1, specifically, focuses on “Control of Production and Service Provision”.

This section states that the organization should control the production and service provision under controlled conditions. Controlled conditions must include, as applicable:

  1. Availability of documented information that defines characteristics of products and services.
  2. Availability of documented information that defines the activities to be performed and the results to be achieved.
  3. Implementation of production and service provision under controlled conditions.
  4. Availability and use of suitable monitoring and measuring resources.
  5. Implementation of monitoring and measurement activities at appropriate stages to verify that criteria for control of processes and process outputs, and acceptance criteria for products and services, have been met.
  6. Use of suitable infrastructure and process environment for operation of processes.
  7. Appointment of competent persons, including any required qualification.
  8. Validation and control of special processes.
  9. Implementation of product release, delivery, and post-delivery activities.

Moreover, the organization must ensure that when the process for production and service provision changes, the integrity of the product or service is maintained. This may include meeting requirements for products and services to be provided to the customer and for the products and services to be obtained from external providers.
