AS9100 is an international quality management standard specifically designed for the aerospace industry. It is based on ISO 9001, but includes additional requirements to address the unique and stringent requirements of the aerospace industry. The standard aims to ensure quality and safety throughout the aerospace supply chain.
Clause 8 of AS9100 (AS9100D) addresses “Operation” and can be broken down into several subclauses, as described below:
8.1 Operational Planning and Control This subclause emphasizes the need for organizations to plan, implement, and control processes needed to meet product and service requirements. It includes requirements for determining product and service requirements, establishing criteria for processes, and implementing necessary control measures.
8.2 Requirements for Products and Services This subclause requires organizations to ensure they fully understand customer requirements, as well as any statutory and regulatory requirements related to their products and services. It covers communication with customers, review of requirements, and managing changes in requirements.
8.3 Design and Development of Products and Services This section focuses on the design and development process of products and services, ensuring they meet customer and regulatory requirements. It covers design and development planning, inputs, controls, outputs, and changes.
8.4 Control of Externally Provided Processes, Products, and Services This subclause requires organizations to establish criteria for the evaluation, selection, and monitoring of external providers (e.g., suppliers, subcontractors). It also addresses the control of externally provided processes, products, and services to ensure they meet specified requirements.
8.5 Production and Service Provision This section addresses the control of production and service provision processes, including the release, delivery, and post-delivery of products and services. It covers requirements for controlling equipment, tools, software, and work environment, as well as for validating production processes, preserving products, and controlling changes in production.
8.6 Release of Products and Services This subclause requires organizations to implement processes for the verification and release of products and services, ensuring they meet specified requirements. This includes documenting evidence of conformity and obtaining authorization for product and service release.
8.7 Control of Nonconforming Outputs In this section, organizations are required to establish processes for the identification, documentation, evaluation, and disposition of nonconforming outputs. This includes taking appropriate action to prevent the unintended use or delivery of nonconforming products or services.
By addressing these aspects of operation, AS9100 ensures that organizations in the aerospace industry maintain a high level of quality and safety throughout their processes. Compliance with Clause 8 helps organizations to reduce risks, improve customer satisfaction, and continually improve their operations.
